The Sustainable Communities Project is a joint initiative of Churches Together in Cumbria, Voluntary Action Cumbria, Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Energy Efficiency Advice Centre and Eden Local Agenda 21.
The project empowers local communities to take action together to benefit the environment, both locally and globally.
5 pilot Sustainable Communities in Cumbria, range in scale from a single street to a market town:

- Greener Heating systems
- Better insulation in homes
- Increased use of low energy light bulbs
- Increased use of water hippos
- Recycling more
- Greening schools and journeys to school
- Tree planting
- Car sharing scheme
- Bike bank
- Local Exchange Trading Scheme (LETS)
- Marketing local produce
