Churches Together in Cumbria set up the Social Responsibility Forum in
1995 to bring together representatives of all the denominations and of existing
ecumenical groups working in the field of social responsibility.
The Social Responsibility
Forum aims to:
-
Increase the profile of social
responsibility in the churches and promote ecumenical action on social issues.
-
Increase the engagement of the
Church with secular partners and structures, and in the political process.
-
Provide an opportunity for
exploration of and discussion about social issues, leading to appropriate
responses and actions.
The Social Responsibility Forum considered the issue of UK nuclear weapons and especially the question of Trident replacement at its October 2006 meeting. It urges all Churches and Christians in Cumbria to engage with this issue as a matter of urgency. For more information click here.

The Convener of the Social Responsibility Forum is Mrs Susan Aglionby. Susan Aglionby is a farmer at Houghton near Carlisle. She has been on the executive committee for Cumbria Youth Alliance, visited for victim support and assisted with riding for the disabled. Having lost all her stock in the foot and mouth crisis of 2001, Susan quickly restocked and completed organic conversion in 2003. She farms125 acres single handed, wonderfully supported by family, neighbours and students who come from near and far for work experience at The Croft. Susan is a trustee of Cumbria Community Foundation, chairing their grants committee; sits on Allerdale Youth Bank; is international adviser for Girl Guiding in Cumbria North; and is a foundation governor of Trinity School, serving on the pastoral committee. Last year Susan welcomed over 700 visitors to the farm, doing her best to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for the connection between the food we eat and where it is produced. Susan worships regularly at Carlisle Cathedral.
