Enough Food for Everyone, IF ... PDF Print E-mail

If

Find out and get involved in the IF campaign, targetting the G8 meeting in the UK, 8- 17th June 2013 (London and Enniskillen)

Nearly one billion people go to bed hungry every night and two million children die from malnutrition every year. We've made progress in other areas, but hunger is still the great scandal of our age. All around the world, even in the UK, people are struggling to feed their families.

In 2013, the government has promised to provide 0.7% of national income for aid and to host a Hunger Summit. We must make sure they keep these promises. In June, the world’s most powerful leaders will meet in the UK at the G8.

This is our best opportunity to tackle hunger. We must make IF happen.

What’s happening in 2013?
You can find a timeline of the key moments in the Enough Food For Everyone IF campaign in our Get Involved section.

What do we want?
We want our leaders to act on the four big issues that mean so many people do not get enough food.

Aid: Enough Food For Everyone IF we give enough aid to stop children dying from hunger and help the poorest families feed themselves.

Tax:Enough Food For Everyone IF governments stop big companies dodging tax in poor countries.

Land:Enough Food For Everyone IF we stop poor farmers being forced off their land and grow crops to feed people, not fuel cars.

Transparency:Enough Food For Everyone IF governments and big companies are honest and open about their actions that stop people getting enough food.

Together, we can make IF happen.

The more of us who get involved, then the greater pressure there will be on world leaders to tackle global hunger in 2013.

St John's Levens Recycling with a Difference! PDF Print E-mail

St John's LeSt Johns Levens Recyclingvens has run a recycling coffee morning for four years now, in 2013 with the help of 14 of our young people who managed the reycling collections. We collect items not covered by the local authority and or where charities can make good use of the recycling credits.

So 15 full bin-bags of Christmas cards were taken to Marks and Spencer who collect them for the Woodland Trust; they use the recycling credits to plant new native trees. Used stamps - two large full buckets worth once trimmed - were sent to St John's Hospice.

Three large buckets of batteries were given to a local primary headteacher who can get money fro his school fund from the recycling credits.

Two large bin bags of screw-caps from plastic milk bottles went to St Mary's Church Windermere - who have a link in Southampton with a company which makes personalised disabled aids, including wheelchairs from the recycling credits.St Johns Levens Eco Award 2013

Foreign coin and old British notes and coin are sold to collectors by The Children's Society. Just to cover costs, we also collected unwanted Christmas gifts which were sold at bargain prices - on the basis that one man's trash is another man's treasure!

The most exciting aspect if the event - apart from keeping all the recycling items out of landfill and the fundraising potential for worthy charities - is the opportunity for outreach it provides to members of the village community who never come to church.

On this occasion, and in a forum far wider than our usual church congregation, Bishop Robert and Archdeacon Penny Driver came to present our second Eco-Congregation award and the assembled members of the village community were able to hear why we as Christians take Creation Care so seriously.
